Finding your way to Family in the Netherlands

“It is not about where you come from; it’s where you’re going that counts.”
It’s not about the destinationit’s about the journey.”

There are so many phrases, quotes, mantras, and sayings tackling this strange place in life.
But what does this mean for you?

As you enter the new phase of life as a brand new parent, amidst the confusion, you may often wonder…
How can I get to my dream destination, that place I long for:

  • A beautiful and loving family
  • A tight-knit and supportive group of friends
  • A reliable network of new mothers and parents to grow, support, and nurture each other when the uncertainty kicks in

Giving birth in another country and culture can be filled with challenges you may never have expected.
A lot of aspects – Maternity & Paternity leave, healthcare, employer visits, and more – can turn out to be different than what may be the case at home.
I’ve been where you are. I have given birth and I’m now raising a family in the Netherlands.
I know from personal experience that so much of what we think by default can be irrelevant in another country.

It’s my mission to make sure you don’t have to feel this way.
This is the reason why I started Tiny Expat!

It’s all Dutch to me!

To truly thrive in this country and its many communities, you first need to understand how things work in this new world around you.
Yet how can you do this if everything is in Dutch and things
aren’t the same as back home
Let’s start with the first problem – navigating through the Dutch language.

I know from experience that it’s a hard language to learn. If you’re struggling with the language, you’re not alone!
A friend of mine has learned
6 languages and lived in many different countries including China.
She says Dutch is an impossible language to understand
, it just does not work in her head.
And this is coming from a polyglot!

If you are in Holland as a working immigrant, you likely work in your native language or English.
All your community around you uses English, making it a joy to live here.
Why go through the hassle of learning the Dutch language and culture?

Then suddenly, you decide to start a family, and your world gets turned upside down.

  • The midwife speaks to you in Dutch.
  • The insurance company doesn’t share all the information you need to save money.
  • Difficult questions come up – Why do they want to give birth at home?
  • New terms get thrown around – Kraamzorg, what is that?

With all the new information thrown at you, the language switch can be confusing, intimidating, and sometimes frustrating.

It doesn’t need to be – that’s why I started Tiny Expat, for people just like you.
Because I was you.

I know how difficult it can be to start a family in a new country. But unlike me, you now have the community I searched for. All in one place.

Are you considering starting a family or moving your home to the Netherlands, just like I did?
